AL wants EVM in next general polls

The ruling Awami League on Saturday said that it wanted the Election Commission to use electronic voting system in the next general election.
Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the party, said at a programme in Dhaka that his party had called on the EC to introduce the EVM system for voting in the next general election.
While inaugurating the national conference of the fourth class employees at Kazi Bashir Uddin Auditorium in the capital, Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, said, ‘The EVM is a modern system. So the chances of mistakes occurring in the system will be low.’
Quader suggested that the EVM would result in elections without any mistake as the counting process would be neutral.
Without naming the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, he said, ‘When we want to take any positive step, they always oppose it.’
‘The EC will take the decision whether to introduce the EVM or not, but we have told the EC that Awami League favours the system,’ he said, adding that the information and communication advisor to the prime minister, Sajeeb Wajed Joy, had proposed using the EVM in the election.
AL central leaders Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, and Dhaka City leader Shahe Alam Murad, among others, spoke at the opening session of the conference.
