Humiliated teacher sent to jail in bribery case

A Narayanganj court on Wednesday sent Piyar Sattar Latif High School headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, humiliated publicly allegedly by a local lawmaker, to jail on his surrender to the court in a bribery case filed by one of colleagues.
Narayanganj additional chief judicial magistrate Ashok Kumar Datta passed the order rejecting Shyamal’s petition for bail a day after the local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Salim Osman was granted bail by a Dhaka court on Tuesday on his surrender in the case of humiliating the teacher in public in May 2016.
Shyamal told reporters after the court order that an influential individual was behind the false case filed only to harass and humiliate him.
The same court in Narayanganj issued warrant for the arrest of Shyamal in the bribery case filed by school’s English teacher Morsheda Begum on July 14, 2016, two months after Shyamal was humiliated reportedly by Salim Osman.
Morsheda accused Shyamal of taking Tk 1,35,000 from her in bribe promising her of inclusion in the monthly pay order.
Bandar police station inspector (investigation) Harunur Rashid submitted a charge sheet in the case against Shyamal on April 17, 2017.
The Narayanganj additional chief judicial magistrate’s court, taking cognisance of the charge, issued the warrant for the arrest of Shyamal Wednesday morning.
Shyamal hit the headlines in 2016 after he was assaulted by a mob and forced to go up and down holding his ears by reportedly Salim Osman.
Shyamal was also removed from his position on May 17, but the education ministry reinstated him and dissolved the school managing committee.
An inquiry commission found that the assault on Shyamal was instigated by several members of the managing committee over some development work.
