BARAPUKURIA COAL MINE CASE SC upholds HC verdict for Khaleda’s trial

The Appellate Division on Sunday upheld a High Court verdict that ordered the resumption of the trial of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Barapukuria coal mine corruption case filed during the military-controlled interim regime in 2008.
A four-judge-bench headed by chief justice SK Sinha rejected Khaleda’s petition filed in June 26, 2016 for leave from the court to appeal against the High Court verdict.
In September 2015, the High Court rejected Khaleda’s writ petition challenging proceedings against her in the corruption case asking the trial court to resume the proceedings which had been stayed by the court following the writ petition in 2008.
The case is now pending with the Special Judges’ Court-2 in Dhaka for hearing in the framing of charges.
On February 26, 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case accusing Khaleda and 15 others of causing a loss of Tk 159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding a contract for operating Barapukuria coal mine to a Chinese company abusing her power as the prime minister.
Khaleda had challenged the legality of the case on the ground that she was first cleared of the charges but she was implicated later on October 5, 2008 by another investigation officer of the with ulterior-motive.
