Zia’s death anniv today

Today is the 36th death anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
BNP and various socio-cultural organisations have taken elaborate programmes to observe the death anniversary of Zia.
Zia, who was the 7th president of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981, was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
Zia came to limelight by broadcasting a declaration of independence on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of the country, in March 1971. He was a sector commander and led the Z Force in the Liberation War in 1971. He was adorned with gallantry award Bir Uttom for his contribution in the war. 
Zia reached the helm of power on November 7, 1975. He became president of the country in April 1977. He founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978.
Zia was born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari village in Bogra.
Marking the 36th death anniversary of Zia, in a message on Monday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that ideal, philosophy and programmes of Zia were the safeguard of ‘protection of our independence, multiparty democracy and the country’s development and progress’.
BNP took 15-day programmes, including holding discussions by the party and its front and associate organisations marking the 36th death anniversary of its founder.
The programmes began on May 27 and would continue until June 10. BNP held discussion in the capital on Monday to mark the day.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and activists would place wreath and offer fateha at the graveside of Zia at Sher-e-Banglanagar in Dhaka this morning.
The party flag would be hoisted at half-mast while black flag would be hoisted atop at the party central office and all its unit offices across the country at 6:00am today.
The party leaders and activists would wear black badges to mourn the death of their leader.
Doctors Association of Bangladesh, a platform of pro-BNP physicians, would launch a free medical camp and provide free medical treatment in front of BNP central office this morning.
Dhaka north and south city BNP units would distribute iftar and clothes among the poor at thana level in the city today.
BNP’s district units would hold discussions and distribute iftar and clothes among distressed people as per their own schedule.
