ENDING TRAFFIC JAM JS body wants full implementation of suggestions

Parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Home on Wednesday recommended complete implementation of its sub-committee suggestions to end traffic congestion in two cities of Dhaka.
Sub-committee members, who made a set of recommendations in September 2016, were frustrated with authorities’ slow pace in carrying out their suggestions.
‘We have recommended for proper implementation of the suggestions made by the sub-committee,’ said the standing committee member Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon following a meeting in parliament on the day. 
About 20 million people live in Dhaka, which is currently experiencing growing traffic congestion that causes huge financial and working hour loss.
The sub-committee suggestions, included commissioning of new public buses by scrapping old and unfit vehicles from streets, making footpaths free from illegal occupiers, establishing coordination among Dhaka City Corporations, Dhaka WASA, DESCO, BTCL authorities in digging roads; constructing new loop at Mahakhali flyover over passing Mahakhali bus terminal, creating link and by-pass roads around Dhaka city, allocating buses for educational institutions in Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Banani, Uttora and Lalmatia areas.
The committee also recommended more traffic sergeants and traffic police, construction of U-loops at different points, including Gabtoli, Mahakhali, Saidabad bus terminals, consortium of bus companies, increasing of fines for traffic rule violation and training of drivers.
A standing committee member said that representatives of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, police and others implementing agencies had informed the standing committee that they were working on the recommendations.
‘It is really frustrating that authorities are not taking the matters seriously and they are not reaching root of the problem of traffic congestions’ said Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon also chief of the sub-committee. 
Standing committee chairman Tipu Munshi presided over the meeting that was also attended by home minister Asaduzzman Khan, committee members Mozammel Hossain, Shamsul Haque Tuku, Faridul Haque Khan, Abul Kalam Azad, home ministry’s public security division secretary Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque, Border Guard Bangladesh director general Major General Abul Hossain, among others.
