ONE YEAR OF MITU MURDER Slow pace of investigation frustrates family

The parents of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, slain wife of former police superintendent Babul Akter, expressed their frustration as the police neither could complete investigation into the murder case nor could unearth the motive behind the killing even after one year of her murder.
The victim’s parents expressed their disappointment as the investigation had apparently slowed down after a certain period of time after murder of their daughter.
The investigators, however, said that the reason behind the murder would be clear after the arrest of Kamrul Islam Shikdar Musa, who they claimed to be the key suspect of the killing.
Mitu was hacked and shot dead on June 5, 2016 in Chittagong city’s GEC intersection while she was escorting her son to a school bus to Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.
‘No headway was seen from a certain stage of the investigation. In early stage of investigation, police managed to arrest several suspects, but later they were lax in investigating the case,’ Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain, also a retired police officer, contended
‘We are frustrated as police still could not find out the motive of the murder,’ added Mosharraf.
He said that they informed the investigation officer of the case that Babul had extra marital relationship with at least two women.
‘I suspect that Babul was behind the murder,’ he said.
‘According to police investigation, Musa organised the killers but it is still not clear whether Musa killed Mitu for his personal gains or he was asked to do so,’ he said.
Talking to New Age, Babul termed his father-in-law’s allegation of extra marital relationship baseless.
The former police super, also plaintiff of the case of killing his wife, said that he should not make any comment while police was investigating the case.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Md Kamruzzaman, also investigation officer of the case, said they were investigating the case with their highest effort.
‘We arrested seven persons so far. Some of them gave confessional statements before court. According to the confessional statements Musa, a resident of Rangunia upazila organised the killers,’ said Kamruzzaman adding that the motive would be clear if they could arrest Musa.
The investigators so far disclosed the names of nine people — Musa, Ehtesamul Haque Bhola, Nurun Nabi, Nurul Islam Rashed, Shahjahan, Motaleb Miah Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Kalu and Saidul — who were supposedly involved in the homicide.
Of them, police arrested five people. Nabi and Rashed were killed in a ‘gunfight’ on July 5. Musa and Kalu are still absconding, according to police.
Two suspects — Wasim and Anwar, mentioned in their judicial statements that Musa hired a group to kill Mitu and he led the attack.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police on October 6 last year announced Tk 5 lakh bounty on Musa.
Musa’s wife Panna Akter earlier at a press conference alleged that a team of plainclothes detained him from Chittagong city’s Bandar area on June 22. Police denied her claim.
Babul Akter worked Chittagong as assistant commissioner and additional deputy commissioner in Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s detective branch.
The murder took place couple of days after he had left Chittagong for Dhaka where he had been posted as police super.
Police picked up Babul from his in-laws’ house in the capital’s Banashri area on June 24 last year. After 15 hour-interrogation, he was released.
On September 6, home ministry through a circular stated that Babul was relieved of his job on the basis of his application.
