Concerns about some tax provisions to be addressed: PM

Amid concerns of the business community and the people about some provisions of tax, VAT and excise duty in the proposed budget for 2017-18 fiscal year, prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said that her government would look into those for finding solutions.
‘We’ve given the biggest-ever budget in the country’s history amounting to about Tk four lakh crore. There will be discussions on the proposed budget in parliament...there might be some problems for some people. We will look into and resolve those,’ she said.
The prime minister was addressing the joint an iftar party organised by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Dhaka Union of Journalists at National Press Club in Dhaka.
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, PM’s media adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, BFUJ president Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, secretary general Omar Faruq, DUJ president Shaban Mahmood also spoke at the event moderated by DUJ secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury.
Making it clear that the government is not holding back a new wage structure for journalists and newspaper workers, she said formation of the 9th Wage Board was being delayed by the media owners.
‘We’ve already given nod to the 9th Wage Board. The government is not holding it back; rather the owners are making the delay. Here, I see, many owners are present and I hope they would do their part,’ she added.
Sheikh Hasina said owners must send their representatives to the tri-partied committee of wage board to make it effective.
‘I want every owner to abide by the wage board law... I know there are some owners, who follow it and some others who do not.’
She also said the electronic media should also come under the purview of the wage board.
