Abbas, Ripon take nomination forms for Dhaka South, Manjur for Ctg.

Three mayoral aspirants from opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday collected nomination papers apparently giving a broad hint of participation in the polls to three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong set for April 28. BNP’s Dhaka City unit convener Mirza Abbas and BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon collected nomination forms on Friday for  mayoral post of the Dhaka south city corporation polls. In Chittagong, incumbent BNP backed Chittagong City Corporation mayor M Manjur Alam Manju took the nomination form to contest for the same post on Friday. He resigned from the post before collecting the nomination papers. AKM Shahjahan, lawyer of Abbas, who was mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation in 1991, took the form from the office of the returning officer for Dhaka South, Mihir Sarwar. Zillur Rahman, a lawyer, collected nomination paper for Ripon, a former president of Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal, BNP’s associate body for students.

Ripon also served the undivided DCC as a consultant. The Awami League nominated Sayeed Khokon, son of former city mayor Mohammad Hanif, for the Dhaka south city corporation. Another Awami League aspirant candidate for DSC, Haji Mohammad Salim, apparently withdrew himself from the race after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday night. Salim flew to India Wednesday night citing in his Facebook page – treatment – as the reason for going off after being confirmed of not getting party support in the polls. The number of total mayoral aspirants rose to 30 in DSC. The other aspirants are Abdus Salaam, Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, Md Selim Bhuiyan, Haji Saifuddin Ahmed Milon, Golam Mawla Rony, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Shahidul Islam, Abdur Rahman, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Zahidur Rahman, Moshiur Rahman, A S M Akram, Kazi Abul Bashar, Abu Naser, Mohammad Masud Hossain, Babul Sardar Chakhari, Advocate MD Ayub Hossain, Abdul Khalek, Dilip Bhadra, Shah Alam, Shahin Khan, Md Shafiullah Chowdhury, Md Riazuddin, Md Bahrane Sultan Bahar, Akhteruzzaman Alias Aiatullah and Imtiaz Alam. The last date for filing nomination for mayor and councillor posts is tomorrow, March 29. In Dhaka south, Abdul Awal Mintoo, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, collected nomination papers, to join the mayoral race.

The prime minister nominated former FBCCI president Annisul Huq as party candidate for the mayoral race. On Friday three mayoral aspirants collected nomination forms from Dhaka North City. They are Nader Chowdhury, Sheikh Md Fazle Bari Masud and Mahbubur Rahman. With the three aspirants, the total number of people who collected forms for mayoral posts from Dhaka North City rose to 26 till Friday. They are Mahi B Chowdhury, Md Abu Taher, Fakir Sheikh Muslemuddin Ahmed, Sheikh Shahiduzzaman, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Sarah Begum Kabari, Ekhlas Uddin Molla, Naeem Hasan, Taiful Siraj, Md Atiqur Rahman Nazim, A Y M Quamrul Islam, Bahauddin Ahmed Babul, Irad Ahmed Siddiqui, Kazi Md Shahidullah, Bobby Hajjaj, Helena Jahangir, Moazzem Hossain Khan Mojlish, Shamsul Alam Chowhdury, Abdullah Al Kafi, Anisuzzaman Khokon and Md Zaman Bhuiyan. In Chittagong, incumbent BNP backed Chittagong City Corporation mayor M Manjur Alam Manju collected nomination form to contest the next mayoral race hours after tendering his resignation from his post of mayor on Friday. The ruling Awami League picked AZM Nasir who already collected nomination forms to contest as mayoral contender in the port city. ‘From today,

I am no more mayor of the city as I am going to contest the upcoming city poll, and panel mayor-1 will act as acting mayor of the city,’ Manju said during his resignation. The Chittagong city BNP on Thursday extended its support to Manju for the mayor polls to CCC. Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, president of the city unit, made the announcement following a meeting at his residence in the port city. Manjur became mayor in 2010 defeating Awami League-backed ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, his former mentor. Including Manzur, a total of 15 mayoral aspirants collected nomination forms from Chittagong city. The other are Arif Mainuddin, Gazi Md Alauddin, Solaiman Alam Sheith, Golam Yaiz Dani, Md Forkan Chowhury, Syed Aslam Zoha, Hossain Md Mujibul Haque, M A Matin, Md Shah Alam, Advocate Abdus Sattar, Abul Monsur and Md Shafiul Alam. Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan police, on Thursday said that police will take action if those accused in criminal cases join the city polls race or electioneering, without securing bail. ‘If investigators in the cases want it, those candidates might be arrested,’ Monirul said, replying to a question on whether the move would create an obstacle to the election process. Monirul also said people who are out on bail but have criminal records will be under watch so that they cannot influence electioneering unlawfully.
