Nominations of Mintoo, Pintu cancelled.

The Election Commission on Wednesday cancelled the mayoral nominations of BNP leaders Abdul Awal Mintoo and Nasiruddin Pintu and four independent aspirants. Returning Officer Shah Alam said that the nomination of Mintoo, a mayoral aspirant for Dhaka North City, was cancelled as it was seconded by a person who is not a voter in DNC. He made the announcement after scrutiny held at the Returning office at NILG Bhaban at Agargaon. Mintoo’s lawyer Ehsanur Rahman told reporters that his client will appeal against scrapping of his nomination. On scrutiny the nomination of Mintoo’s son Tabith Awal was found valid. The nomination of ruling Awami League’s mayoral nominee for Dhaka North City Annisul Huq was found valid. Out of 21 mayoral aspirants for Dhaka North City the nominations 18 other aspirants were found valid.

The nomination of Nayeem Hasan, an independent mayoral aspirant for Dhaka North City was cancelled as he had defaulted on repayment of loans, said the RO. The other mayoral aspirants for Dhaka North City whose nominations were found valid included AL leader Sarah Begum Kabari, Gana Sanghati Andolan chief coordinator Mohammad Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh joint secretary general Mahi Badruddozza Chowdhury, Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Abdullah Al Kafee, Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad’s former adviser Boby Hajjaj, actor and JSD leader Nader Chowdhury, Shamsul Alam Chowdhury, Chowdhury Irad Ahmad Siddiqui, AYM Kamrul Islam, Bahauddin Ahmed, Kazi Mohammad Shahidullah, Moazzem Hossain Khan Majlish, Mohahmmad Anisuzzaman Khokon, Mohammad Zaman Bhuiyan, Sheikh Shahiduzzaman, Sheikh Mohammad Fazle Bari Maswood and Mostafa Kamal Azadi. BNP leader Mirza Abbasuddin Ahmed’s mayoral nomination for Dhaka South City was found valid. Mirza Abbas is a former mayor of undivided Dhaka city. AL’s mayoral nominee for Dhaka South City Sayeed Khokon’s nomination was found valid. The EC cancelled the nomination of Dhaka South City mayoral aspirant Nasiruddin Pintu, a former BNP MP.

The retuning officer Mihir Sarwar Murshed said that his nomination was scrapped as he did not provide clear information about the sentence in the BDR carnage case he was serving. The nominations of 22 other mayoral aspirants for DSC were also found valid while the nominations of two independent aspirants were scrapped on different grounds. In Chittagong, mayoral nominations of both the major parties, M Monjur Alam of BNP and A Z M Nasir Uddin of AL, were found valid. Outgoing mayor of Chittagong, Monjur is seeking re-election. After scrutiny, at Muslim Hall, the RO of Chittagong, Md Abdul Baten said that out of  13 mayoral aspirants for the port city, the nomination of only Md Forkan Chowdhury, an independent aspirant was found invalid  as he failed provide his Tax Identification Number. The scrutiny of nominations of councilor aspirants ends today said ROs.
