11 killed as two-storey tin house caves in

At least 11 people, six of them women, were killed and many others injured as a two-storey tin roofed house, built illegally on government land, collapsed and fell in the Khilgaon Chowdhurypara Lake in the city Wednesday, police and rescuers said.Fire Service men continued their rescue efforts with heavy equipment after neighbours said many of the occupants  were trapped under the debris of the unauthorized house built by city Juba League leader Monir Chowdhury.Motijheel additional deputy commissioner of police Anwar Hossain said the corrugated tin roofed house built on wooden platform on the lake collapsed at about 2.30 PM and fell in the lake.RAJUK chairman Zainul Abedin Bhuiyan said that he instituted a three member probe led by member planning Abur Rahman which would submit a report within a week.Dhaka district administration instituted a separate three –member probe led by additional deputy commissioner Shahidul Islam which would submit a report in five days, said deputy commissioner Tofazzal Hossain Mian.


Rescuers said that neighbours recovered three bodies from under the debris while eight bodies were recovered by the Fire Service and Civil Defence men later.Some 150 tenants lived in the house near the Matir Masjid.The survivors were the tenants who were not at home and several occupants were rescued by neighbours immediately.Neither the police nor the Fire Service rescuers could say immediately how many people were trapped under the debris.‘I was cooking on the second floor of the house, when after sudden jerk the collapse occurred and I jumped out carrying my daughter and granddaughter’ said survivor Hashi Begum.At least a dozen occupants on the ground floor were reported missing, said neighbours who rushed to the spot hearing the cries for help.Shoe-shop employee Idris Ali was heard crying looking for his wife and grand son.Fire Services men began rescue operations at about 4 PM.Fire Service deputy director ABM Nurul Haque, said the rescuers had to cut and remove the wooden-platform and tin structure debris submerged seven feet under water to search for the injured or the dead.The rescue from the under water debris was hampered by furniture and utensils, said Fire Service officials.At about 9 PM, Fire Service brought a rented crane to the spot to remove the debris in the lake obstructing the rescue operations.The district administration said that it was gathering the names of the missing and the dead.The officials said that Tk 20,000 would be paid to families for the burial of each dead and Tk 5,000 would be given to each  injured.The authorities provided food to the survivors after shifting them to the Chowdhury Para Primary School.The dead included, Nizam, 45, his wife Kalpana, 40, their daughter in-law Ruksana, 22, Mizan, 35, Harun, 45, Farzana, Josna, Runa, Sajeda, 19, Saiful, 14, and Zakir.
Neighbours identified the victims who were am.Neighbours said that Monir Chowdhury had rented out the unauthorised accommodations he had illegally  built on PWD’s land. He also provided illegal utility connections.
