No rehabilitation support to people displaced by floods

Thousands of villagers displaced by floods began to return to their homes after spending days together on embankments finding none to provide any rehabilitation support.
Defying rains they met local government leaders to get themselves enlisted for rehabilitation support from the government.
According to government estimates 6.5 lakh people were affected by the devastating floods in 13 districts.
Officials told New Age that the government had no estimates about how many villagers were dislodged by the floods or how many of them would need immediate rehabilitation support to rebuild their houses. 
On Wednesday, hundreds of dislodged villagers queued up in front of government offices across the country to seek assistance for reconstructing their homes. 
Starvation and other sufferings for days together make it impossible for people dislodged by floods to wait any more for the rehabilitation process that seems to be so slow, said Anwar Ali of Govordhan, Aditmari upazila, Lalmonirhat.
Anwar, who is among the displaced people from 63 chars in Lalmonirhat had to starve occasionally during the 12 days he spent on embankment with countless other villagers from the flooded areas.
Though his home was destroyed by flood, Anwar is yet to get any help from the government to rebuild his home. 
According to the Lalmonirhat district administration’s estimates at least 3,667 houses were destroyed by floods, mostly in 63 chars, reported our Lalmonirhat correspondent. 
Lalmonirhat deputy commissioner AFM Alauddin Khan said all the affected people would be rehabilitated in due course, but right now no orders had been received from the authorities to do that. 
According to the estimates of Own Village Advancement, an NGO, at least 6,341 houses had been destroyed by floods in Lalmonirhat district.
On Wednesday, rains forced postponement of rice distribution by the authorities among the erosion-affected villagers in Tongibari upazila, Munshiganj, reported our correspondent.
Flood waters receded throughout the country Wednesday but the mighty Jamuna breached a 20 metre segment of the embankment at Chouhali, Sirajganj, reported our Sirajganj correspondent.
The Jamuna water level fell though the river was flowing above its danger mark only at Sirajganj.
The water levels fell also on the Brahmaputra, Padma, Surma and Kushiyara , according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.
