DOMESTIC GAS PRICE HC strikes down 2nd phase hike

The High Court Division on Sunday struck down the 2nd phase domestic gas price hike in the current year and called it ‘illegal.’
The court order relieved domestic gas consumers from paying the additional tariff of Tk 150 from August.
The court, however, condoned the gas supply utility from repayment of the additional tariff to the consumers, they paid June and July.
In the 1st phase, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission increased monthly gas tariff to Tk 750 from Tk 600 for a single burner and to Tk 800 from Tk 650 for a double-burner stove with effect from March 1.
In the 2nd phase, beginning June 1, monthly gas tariff was increased to Tk 900 for a single burner stove and to Tk 950 for a double-
burner stove.
In the verdict, the bench directed the BERC to issue fresh public notice to make the directives effective.
A bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque gave the verdict after hearing architect Mubasshar Hussain’s writ petition filed on behalf of Consumer Association of Bangladesh.
