BOGRA RAPE Three taken on remand, two more arrested

A Bogra court on Sunday allowed police to question in their custody three men, including the district unit Awami Shramik League convener, arrested in connection with raping a girl after promising her admission in a local college.
Police had sought seven days for questioning, but the court granted three days, said Abul Kalam Azad, police officer investigating the rape incident.
Of the three — Tufan Sarkar, Bogra unit Awami Shramik League convener, is accused of raping the girl while the two others — Rupom and Dipu were his associates in the crime.
Meanwhile, Bogra police additional superintendent Sanatan Chakrabarty said police on Sunday evening arrested Bogra municipality ward 2 councillor Marzia Hasan Rumki and her mother (mother-in-law of Tufan) Ruma Khatun from Pabna.
Earlier on Saturday night, police arrested four people in connection with the rape that took place on July 17.
One of the arrestees, Atiqur Rahman Atiq, confessed to have assisted the crime immediately after the arrest.
Police arrest came after the victim filed a case on July 28.
On the morning of July 28, the rapist’s associates picked up the victim and her mother from their home at the order of Asha Khatun, wife of the rapist. Asha blamed the girl for enticing her husband.
Asha and her sister Marzia Hasan Rumki, also Bogra municipality councillor, then unleashed a series of brutal torture and eventually shaved the head of the mother and her daughter.
The victims are currently undergoing treatment at Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College and their conditions were not stated to be critical.
The district administration formed a three-member committee for investigating the incident.
The district Shramik League on Sunday said that they cancelled the rapist’s party membership after the rape allegation surfaced against them.
The incident outraged the nation and social media were rife with criticism demanding punishment of all those involved in the rape and humiliation of the victims.
Different cultural and political organisations burst into protests in Bogra demanding punishment of the perpetrators.
A human chain was formed at Satmatha in the afternoon with the participation of organisations like Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi, Khelaghar Asar, College Theatre, Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Prothom Alo Bondhu Sobha.
Bogra Sadar police superintendent Sanatan Chakravarty said that police were raiding places to arrest six other people accused in the case.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said that they had discussed the issue in the meeting of the party secretaries at Dhanmandi office on Sunday.
‘As Shramik League is our associate organisation, we can take any action against him directly,’ Quader said speaking at a press conference there.
‘We shall instruct the Shramik League central leaders to take actions against the district leaders,’ Quader said.
