BOGRA RAPE Seven more remanded in police custody

Seven more people were remanded in police custody by a Bogra court on Monday in connection with the rape incident in which the victim was promised admission in a local college.
The people taken into police custody for questioning include the rapist’s wife Asha Khatun, her sister Marzia Hasan Rumki and their mother Rumi Begum, who blamed the victim for enticing the rapist, Tufan Sarkar, and tortured her and her mother.
Rumki is a councillor at Bogra municipality.
On July 28, she had the victim and her mother brought to her residence in Bogra town and allegedly tortured them for about four hours.
Her sister and mother also participated in the torture and had heads of the victim and her mother shaved.
After police produced them before court with a seven-day remand prayer for each, Rumki and her sister Asha said that the victim had developed a relation with Tufan, the rapist.
Their mother Rumi said that she ordered shaving the heads of the victim and her mother, but claimed she did not know that it could constitute an offense.
Chief judicial magistrate court of Shyam Sundar Roy granted police four days for questioning Rumki while her sister and mother would be questioned for two days each.
The court also allowed police to question Rumki’s father Jamilur Rahman Runu, and three others — Munna, Jitu and Jiban Rabi Das —in their custody for two days each.
Jiban Rabi Das is the barber who shaved the heads of the rape victim and her mother. Jiban told court that he could not help but follow the order.
Earlier, on July 17, the Bogra unit Sramik League convener Tufan raped the girl in his house.
Tufan had the girl picked up from her home. He used to stalk the girl by saying that he could be helpful in securing her admission in a local college.
The victim comes from a poor family which can hardly afford her educational expenses. The girl recently passed her SSC exam.
Police arrested Tufan and three of his associates on July 28. Two cases have been filed against ten people in connection with the rape and the torture that followed thereafter.
Meanwhile, the medical test of the victim was held at Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College on Monday. Doctors said the test report would take a week to be completed.
Bogra police superintendent Asaduzzaman said that the seven remanded on Monday were arrested from Bogra, Pabna, and Savar since Sunday night.
Different organisations demonstrated in Bogra town on Monday demanding punishment of the perpetrators of the crime.
As the call for the punishment of the perpetrators gets stronger, the victim’s mother faced pressure from the rapist’s family to settle the matter out of the court.
‘The rapist’s family came up with a marriage proposal. I won’t bow to their demand under any circumstances,’ said the victim’s mother.
