BNP-backed councillor candidate arrested.

The police on Saturday night arrested Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed councillor candidate in the elections to Dhaka South City Corporation from Paltan area. This is the second arrest of a candidate after formal electioneering in the April 28 polls to the three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong began. Paltan police arrested Kazi Hasibur Rahman, better known as Shakil, from Chamelibagh area Saturday night, said officer-in-charge of the police station, Golam Morshed. Shakil, candidate of ward no. 13 of DSCC, was accused in a case of sabotage activities in Paltan area, said SM Jahangir Alam, acting deputy commissioner for media and public relations of DMP. Police had filed the case against Shakil in January for crude bomb blasts, arson attack, and assault on police. Earlier on April 16, BNP-backed councilor ALM Kawser Ahmed was arrested by Mirpur police. Chief election commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad had earlier directed the police not to harass candidates without reason, but not to spare anyone violating the law.
