AL men obstruct Khaleda on campaign trail.

Ruling Awami League activists on Sunday obstructed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade and showed black flags at three places in the capital’s Uttara area during her electioneering for Dhaka north city mayoral candidate Tabith Awal. The Awami League activists also threw black flags at Khaleda’s motorcade near House Building crossing at Uttara. No casualties were, however, reported. Khaleda called for deployment of army in the elctions to three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong slated for April 28 and urged voters to go to polling centres. She made the demand while talking to voters at Subastu Nazar valley at Badda in the capital during the electioneering. Responding to a voter, Khaleda said that she was receiving a good response from people.

A group of 60 to 70 leaders and activists of Awami League and its student and youth bodies staged a procession near House Building crossing at about 6:00pm when Khaleda was inside North Tower shopping complex near the crossing for campaigning for Tabith. The Chhatra League and Juba League men also showed black flags to Khaleda at Khilkhet and near Jasimuddin Road crossing at Uttara. The police and BNP leaders and activists escorted Khaleda’s motorcade. Several hundred BNP leaders and activists joined Khaleda when she arrived at Amir Complex where she sought vote from sellers, shoppers and shop owners for Tabith and distributed leaflets. Khaleda during her second day electioneering on Sunday went to places include SB Plaza market, Cosmo Shopping Complex at Uttara and Jamuna Future Park at Badda. Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka north city Annisul Haque promised that he would not destroy his image if he would be elected.

During his electioneering at Kalyanpur slum, he promised that in the next five years he would work for the citizens. BNP-backed mayoral hopeful for Dhaka south city Mirza Abbas’s wife Afroza Abbas conducted the electioneering for Mirza Abbas in Salek garden areas of ward 22, Maneshwar Road at Rayerbazar, Dhanmondi residential area and New Market area. BNP leaders said that Afroza would announce the election manifesto of Abbas at VIP Lounge at the National Press Club today. Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka south city Sayeed Khokon distributed leaflets on Sunday in the capitals Kotwali and Sutrapur areas. Khokon conducted the campaign along with about 2,000 people of the old town, a sound box, one pick-up van, three rickshaws with loudspeakers and five hand mikes in violation of the Electoral Co of Conduct.

Processions of AL-backed councillor candidates and Chattra League of different universities met in Roy Saheb Bazar intersection, known as Adalatpara, in support of Khokon. Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-backed mayoral candidate for of Dhaka north city Nader Chowdhury expressed concern over the role of the Election $commission. ‘There is no similarity in the promises and works of the commission…The dual role of the EC might hamper the election,’ he said at an election campaign at Mirpur.
