Afroza says Mirza Abbas will present safe, clean DSC.
If elected mayor, Mirza Abbas would present a safe and clean Dhaka South City, his wife Afroza Abbas said Monday while announcing his election manifesto. Afroza has been campaigning for Mirza Abbas who is unable to do it himself. His election manifesto, read out by Afroza at a news conference at National Press Club, if says holding tax would be reduced in Dhaka South City. She said that if elected Mirza Abbas would open complaint centres at each ward to keep abreast with problems facing the residents and introduce community policing to tackle traffic congestion. Afroza criticized holding tax increases in recent years and said if Abbas was elected he would fix holding tax in consultations with the residents. Mirza Abbas will, she said, ensure the supply of safe drinking water and provide sewerage network throughout the Dhaka South City in coordination with Dhaka WASA.
She said that Mirza Abbas will build a permanent walk way on the bank of the r Buriganga to save the river from encroachments and pollution. Mirza Abbas will shift the Dhaka Central Jail to Keraniganj and convert the present prison into an amusement centre of international standard, she said. Abbas will repair the city’s broken roads, set up escalators to make the foot bridges pedestrian friendly and provide security on them, she said. Zebra crossings would be reintroduced for the benefit of pedestrians if Mirza Abbas was elected, said Afroza. Mirza Abbas will, she said, open formalin testing centres at each kitchen market to end selling of chemically treated vegetables and fruits as well as to adulterated foods to free public health from all sorts of hazards. Afroza said Mirza Abbas will modernize maternity centres, open night schools at community centres and the existing schools to increase literacy at each ward. Mirza Abbas will, she said, introduce the system of household waste collection from 12 midnight to 5 AM.
Afroza said that Mirza Abbas will reintroduce door to door waste collection. She said that plants would be set up to produce compost and electricity from the wastes. Mirza Abbas will, she said, provide online service to the residents for collecting all certificates; introduce help lines for the senior citizens, Wi-Fi coverage at public places, various one stop service for the residents and modern waiting rooms at Dhaka court. She said senior citizen centres would be opened at wards so that the elders could spend time there. Hospitals and dormitories would be opened for apparel workers, said Afroza. She said that the city would be made safer by installing close circuit TV cameras on the streets, posting night guards and community police at each ward. Abbas will, said Afroza, hold consultations with town planners, both national and from abroad, to identify the city’s problems, launch a 180-day short term project to solve its problems. She said ward wise budgets would be adopted to turn Dhaka into a planned city.
Afroza said replying to questions that she came under attacks from the police and ruling Awami League men during her election campaigns. She said the houses where she had gone to offer prayers taking breaks from the campaigns for her husband, were cordoned off by the police to scare away the voters and the campaigners. ‘I came from Pabna as the daughter in law after marrying Mirza Abbas and now it is your duty to ensure my safety,’ said Afroza. She said ‘If the government wants a January 5 type election it would not deploy army but if it wants free and fair polls it would deploy army.’ Professor Emajuddin Ahmed, BNP leaders Hannan Shah, Shawkat Mahmud, Mahbub Uddin Khokon were at the news conference with Afroza.
