haleda’s motorcade comes under attack again.
The motorcade of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, came under attack again by ruling Awami League men while she was campaigning for her party-backed Dhaka south city mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas near Fakirapul kitchen market on Tuesday evening. The attackers were chanting slogans in favour of Awami League saying ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu,’ witnesses said. A group of ruling party men attacked the Khaleda’s convoy with stones while she was campaigning at around 8:20pm. None was hurt in the attack. The attackers fled away as opposition activists chased them, witnesses said. Khaleda, her security team and other members of the convoy rode same vehicles damaged by ruling party men on Monday to continue her campaign on Tuesday. A seven-member team of police was seen during Khaleda’s visit.
The fresh attack was carried out a day after the former prime minister’s motorcade came under attack on Monday afternoon when she was campaigning for BNP-backed Dhaka north city mayoral candidate Tabith Awal at Karwanbazar. Six people were injured in the attack. Khaleda started the electioneering for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday at about 5:20pm and sought votes for party-backed candidates at places including Shahjahanpur, Malibagh and Paltan. ‘You should give befitting reply to the obstructions and attacks on electioneering through casting votes in favour of Mirza Abbas,’ she urged voters at furniture market at Shahjahanpur. Referring to Monday’s attack, Khaleda, addressing at a gathering in front of Twin Tower at Shantinagar, alleged that the government went mad watching huge response of voters in the three cities in Dhaka and Chittagong in favour of BNP-backed candidates. She alleged that Monday’s attacked was aimed to kill her and her vehicle was hit by bullets.
The BNP chief started electioneering for BNP-backed candidates on Saturday. Activist of the Awami League and its front organisations on Sunday obstructed Khaleda’s motorcade and showed black flags at three places in the capital’s Uttara area during her electioneering.
