The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia did not campaign for her party-backed mayoral candidates in Dhaka city polls on Thursday as the vehicles used as part of her motorcade were damaged, and personal security staff injured, in continuous recent attacks on her convoy by ruling Awami League men. BNP chairperson’s press wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan told reporters in front of Khaleda Zia’s residence Thursday afternoon that the party chairperson’s election campaign for Thursday had been suspended. He said nine vehicles of Khaleda’s motorcade, including her own vehicle, were damaged, while nine of her personal staff, including security staff and drivers, were injured and hospitalised.

He said the BNP chairperson might resume her campaign on Friday if repair on the damaged cars was completed. Khaleda might join a programme of professionals on Saturday, according to BNP chairperson office sources. The motorcade of Khaleda came under attack on three consecutive days by activists of Awami League and its front wings from Monday to Wednesday at Karwanbazar, Fakirerpul and Banglamotor areas respectively. At least 10 people in her motorcade, including seven of her personal security men, were injured in the attacks, and about nine vehicles of the motorcade, including Khaleda’s one, were vandalised in the attacks. Khaleda started campaigning for her party-backed candidates in the mayoral election in Dhaka on Saturday.
