Floods aggravate in eastern districts, recede in north

The floods which began in the country’s eastern zone in April aggravated due to onrush of waters from India’s Barak basin.
But the flood waters receded further from the northern districts.
The onrush of waters from the Barak basin due to heavy rains there further swelled the Kushiyara-Surma inundating new low lying areas in Sunamganj and Sylhet.
But the floods receded further in Sirajganj, Bogra, Jamalpur and Tangail districts with the water level falling in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department forecast heavy rains would occur in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura for three days beginning today.
Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre executive engineer Sazzad Hossain told New Age that heavy rains in India’s Barak basin as forecast by that country’s met office would further aggravate the floods in the eastern zone of Bangladesh.
He said that the weather pattern showed that the late monsoon was shifting from India’s Bihar and Uttar Pradesh provinces to the northeastern provinces.
Much of Bangladesh was devastated by heavy floods since August causing staggering losses to crops as well as life and property.
