Beastly wrath let loose on girl

A 14-year-old girl died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Saturday, hours after she was set on fire by five to six people allegedly at the behest of her aunt on allegation that she had stolen a mobile phone set in Narsingdi.
The latest victim of cruelty was Mosammat Aziza, daughter of Md Abdus Sattar and Rehana Begum of village Khainkut under Shibpur in Narsingdi.
Aziza, who dropped out of Class V last year, met this tragic end as incidents of violence against children on flimsy grounds are on the rise.
Only a month ago on September 26, a teenage boy, having been tied to a pole, was beaten to death on theft allegation in Mymensingh.
Aziza’s father, a poultry farm owner, said his brother’s wife Beauty Begum, 24, who lost a mobile phone set eight days ago, accused her daughter Aziza of stealing it and Beauty and her mother had threatened to burn her to death if she failed to return the mobile phone set.
He said that his family was harassed for long by Beauty and his paternal aunt over a land dispute and he did not pay heed to the threat as he took it to be a part of mental harassment and never thought a woman could harm a child.
Sattar, quoting what his daughter told him, his son and nephew before her death, said Aziza on Friday around 8:00pm had been browsing the mobile phone of his brother standing under a tree on their yard when Beauty and her cousin Rubel, 26, came and asked where she had got the phone from.
Without giving her any chance to speak, he said, they grabbed the phone while three or four other people came to the place and tied her mouth and hands with a piece of cloth.
He said that they took Aziza about 300 to 400 metres away where they poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire before leaving the spot.
He said that none of the members of his family was in the house then.
‘One who saw the incident ran to my poultry farm to inform me and when I rushed to the spot, I found my daughter on fire and screaming,‘ he said.
Meanwhile, he said, locals gathered and put out the fire.
He said that he immediately took her daughter to Narsingdi Zila Hospital from where she was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
‘My daughter told me that she did not take her aunt’s mobile phone set,’ he began wailing.
Md Sujan, the victim’s brother who had been attending her at DMCH, said his paternal uncle Salam Mia was now a Malaysia expatriate and his aunt Beauty lived alone in their adjacent home.
‘Beauty’s relatives, especially her cousin Rubel, often visit their house and my sister once raised question about Rubel’s frequent visit to their residence,’ he said.
Partha Sankar Paul, resident medical officer of the DMCH burn unit, said they received Aziza at 1:00am and she died from her injuries around 5:00am.
‘She died of cardio-respiratory failure due to complication of 96 per cent burns with inhalation injury,’ Partha said.
Sub-inspector Md Mashiur Rahman of Shahbagh Police station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who prepared the victim’s inquest report, said the whole body of the victim, barring her two feet, was burnt.
Shibpur police officer-in-charge Md Sayeduzzaman said no case was lodged with the police station in this connection until 7:00pm, New Age correspondent in Narsingdi reported.
The OC said that they detained two – Torfuja Begum and Abdur Rashid – for integration and had been trying to arrest the suspects.
