University student hacked to death over betting on BPL match

A BBA student of a private university was hacked to death near his residence at Post Office Lane of Madhya Badda in the capital on Monday.
The victim was identified as Md Nasim Ahmed
Emaduddin, 23, son of Ahmed Saifuddin, and also a third semester Bachelor of Business Administration student of Manarat International University.
The victim’s family alleged that the killing was committed following a scuffle with some local youths over betting on a match of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, a professional cricket league.
Nasim’s elder brother Fahim Ahmed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital said that Nasim was locked into a scuffle with a local youth named Ramjan in front of their residence over betting on a BPL match Sunday night.
Elderly people of the area then mediated their scuffle and took the situation under control saying that they would settle the issue in arbitration Monday afternoon, Fahim added.
But, Ramjan and one of his accomplices, Rashid, threatened Nasim with dire consequences, he said.
On Monday around 9:00am, Fahim said, Nasim went out of their home and a group of youths surrounded him and hacked him indiscriminately and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured in a pool of blood.
He claimed that the attacker youths were associates of Ramjan and Rashid.
Fahim said that he along with locals immediately rushed Nasim to a local clinic from where he was sent to DMCH where on-duty doctors declared him dead around 10:45am.
DMCH police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Bachchu Mia said the body bore stabbing marks in its right chest and in the left abdomen.
Badda police station officer-in-charge Kazi Wazed Ali on Monday 8:00pm said they were expecting a case in this connection.
He said police primarily suspected that Nasim might have been killed as a sequel of feud over betting on the BPL match.
‘We are investigating into the matter and trying to arrest the murderers,’ he said.
