TONU RAPE, MURDER CID interrogates family members

Five members of the family of slain Sohagi Jahan Tonu were interrogated on Wednesday by investigators of Criminal Investigation Department in their office in Dhaka as part of the investigation into rape and murder of Tonu, a Comilla Victoria College girl, inside Mainamati cantonment on March 20, 2016.
‘The family members included Tonu’s parents, two brothers and a sister. They were asked to be present in the CID office on Wednesday morning. The investigators started talking to them one after another sometimes before 1:00pm. The interrogation ended around 8:00pm,’ said one of Tonu’s family members.
Investigators asked the five to visit their office in a single letter, they said without disclosing what the officials asked.
Tonu’s rape and murder inside a protected cantonment created countrywide protests.
‘We are not satisfied with the progress of the investigation,’ said her family members.
‘We have no liberty of movement. We are constantly under surveillance,’ they said.
Meanwhile, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, after attending the 15th founding anniversary of Southeast University at Tejgaon in Dhaka around noon, told reporters that the family members were called to CID office for the sake of ongoing investigation into the murder case.
Tonu, a second-year student of history department and a member of Comilla Victoria College Theatre, went missing on March 20, 2016 after she went out from her house at Alipur staff quarters inside the cantonment in the afternoon to give tuition at two houses in the staff quarters. Her father discovered her body in a bush near their house about 11:30pm on the day.
Following the killing, Tonu’s father lodged a case with Comilla Kotwali police on the following day against unidentified people and investigation of the case was transferred to CID on March 28, 2016.
CID official sources said that they had so far interrogated about 100 people to unearth the real story behind the killing.
None was arrested in connection with the case, they said.
