Udichi activist killed by husband

An activist of Udichi Shilpigoshthi was beaten to death by her husband in her in-law’s residence at Maniknagar in the capital on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ludmila Ahmed Liza, 38, wife of SM Sazzad, of Maniknagar area in the city. She was a former secretary of Dhaka city unit of Udichi and also a member of central song department of the cultural organisation.
Sub-inspector Hasanuzzaman of Mugda police station said that Liza’s husband brought her to Mugda General Hospital on Sunday morning with injury marks in her head and claimed that she was injured by falling in bathroom of their residence.
She was brought dead to the hospital, he said.
Police said that as the physicians suspected that this was not an injury of falling in bathroom, they informed police.
Police, later, went to the hospital and detained Sazzad for interrogation and recovered the body from the hospital and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
The autopsy was conducted on Monday morning, said DMCH police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Bachchu Mia.
He said that the body had injury marks in the right jaw and head. 
Udichi Shilpigoshthi in a statement said Liza’s youngest son said that he witnessed that his father hit his mother’s head with a stick and his mother fell down on the floor.
Mugda police station inspector (investigation) Abul Khayer said Lazi’s father Iqbal Hossain lodged a case with Mugda police station accusing her husband for killing his daughter.
He said that they produced Sazzad before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court where he gave judicial statement confessing his guilt.
The court sent Sazzad to jail, he said. 
SI Hasanuzzaman, also the investigation officer of the case, referring to Sazzad’s judicial statement, said that Sazzad hit his wife’s head with a stick as a sequel of altercation over family matters.
Sazzad told the court that he became mentally upset after losing his job from a private company and they were often locked in altercations.
Meanwhile, different cultural organisations protested at the killing and demanded exemplary punishment of husband.
Udichi Shilpigoshthi will hold a protest rally in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Bangladesh Progressive Writers’ Association in a statement expressed their deep shock and demanded exemplary punishment of the killer.
