How one can support BNP, wonders PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday wondered how a section of people could support BNP and vote for them although Khaleda Zia and BNP-Jamaat burned people to death in the name of hartal and blockade.‘Khaleda Zia and BNP-Jamaat burnt people to death and caused untold sufferings to many in the name of movement. Despite
that, how could some people stand in favour of that party and vote for them…I don’t find any answer to it,’ she said.The prime minister was addressing a function marking the celebration of 154th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Shahzadpur Pilot High School Ground.She laid the foundation stone of Rabindra University, an institution named after Nobel laureate Biswakobi Rabindranath Tagore, from Shahzadpur Pilot High School ground marking the great poet’s 154th birth anniversary.
Mentioning that her government would continue steps to preserve the memories of the great poet, Hasina announced that another university would be set in Kushtia named after the poet as Bangabandhu during his visit to Shilaidah had pledged to establish it.
She also called upon the people of the country, including the people of Shahzadpur, to extend their cooperation and support to her party and the government so that Bangladesh could make its place in global arena as a dignified nation. ‘We don’t want Bangladesh to march backwards.’
The prime minister also assured the local people of building Narina bridge, taking steps for setting up milk-processing factories and marketing dairy products in the area as well as taking steps for the development of the handloom industry.
She also expressed her firm optimism that peace would prevail in the country, as it would be turned into developed one where people would get a better life with no homeless one.
With the foundation laying of Rabindranath University, the prime minister hoped that the construction work would start soon and all would extend their cooperation to this end so that the work could be successfully completed.
Health minister Mohammad Nasim, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, PM’s political affairs adviser HT Imam Local MP Hasibur Rahman Swapon, spoke on the occasion as special guests. Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor was in the chair.
Cultural affairs acting secretary Begum Akhtari Momtaz delivered the address of welcome, while deputy commissioner of Sirajganj Md Billal Hossain gave the vote of thanks. Emeritus Professor Anisuzzaman delivered the ‘Rabindra Sarak’ speech on ‘Rabindranath on civilization and crisis’.
