Fakhrul named in 3 new cases Police seek 30-day remand

Police on Tuesday named opposition BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three new cases filed with Paltan Police Station over torching vehicles in the capital in January.The three investigation officers of the cases also submitted petitions to the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate court seeking 30 days for interrogating Fakhrul in the cases.Confirming the matter, subinspector Aminur Rahman, general recording officer of CMM court, said the hearing on the remand petitions was set for today with the court of magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta.According to the court officials, one of the three cases was filed by police in January 5 against Fakhrul and 28 others for vandalising and torching a bus in front of Bangabandhu Hawkers Market at Gulistan in the capital.The second case was filed against Fakhrul and 49 other leaders and activists of BNP on charge of setting fire to a motorbike of a police man at Fakirapool on January 5.Another case was filed against Fakhrul and 33 others for torching a BRTC bus at Purana Paltan on January 6.
Another Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed July 21 for hearing on charge framing in the case filed against opposition BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 11 other local leaders and activists in a case filed with Motijheel police station in the capital.


As the jail authorities did not produce Mirza Fakhrul before court on Tuesday, his pleader Joynal Abedin Mesbah filed a petition for deferring the hearing on charge framing. The Special Tribunal-2 judge Jakia Parvin deferred the hearing.DB police sub-inspector KM Azijul Haque pressed the charge sheet. According to the charge sheet, some alleged terrorists organised the rally of BNP-Jamaat alliance on the DIT Road on December 6, 2012. In this connection Motijheel police station filed a case accusing 12 people including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir under Explosives Substance Act.The other accused in the case are Md Ahsan Habib, general secretary of Motijheel Thana BNP, Saifullah Khaleq, president of Motijheel Thana BNP, Md Saifullah, Md Rokonuzzaman, Md Alauddin Manik, Atiqur Rahman, Abul Kalam Azad, Golam Hossain, Md Sajib, Md Noor Islam and Md Quamruzzaman. All of them are now in bail.Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir obtained bail from the High Court Division and the rest of them got bail from CMM court.
As per the case statement, BNP-Jamaat-e-islami activists had brought out a procession at Dainik Bangla intersection in the city’s Motijheel on December 12, 2012.
At one stage, the demonstrators had hurled 3/4 crude bombs at on-duty police, and attacked and prevented the law enforcers from discharging their duty.
