Pry pass rate falls to 8yr low, jr school to 7yr low

Pass rate of primary completion examinations fell to its eight-year low while combined pass rate in Junior School Certificate and equivalent examinations dropped to its seven-year low.
Pass rate of Ibtedayi completion exam fell to its five-year low, show results published on Saturday.
Students of general and madrassah streams performed poorly this year as the pass rate decreased by 9.79 percentage points in JSC exams under eight education boards, 7.22 percentage points in Junior Dakhil exams under madrassah board compared with the results in 2016.
Students of primary schools in Primary Education Completion exam and madrassahss student in Ibtedayi Education Completion exam also performed poorly as the pass rate dropped by 3.33 percentage points and 2.91 percentage points respectively in comparison with results in 2016.
Number of Grade Point Average 5 achievers of all the three exams dropped from last year. 
The number of institutions with 100 per cent pass rate decreased while the number of institutes with zero pass rate increased than the previous year.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid blamed new answer script evaluation system for the poor results in Junior School Certificate and its equivalent Junior Dakhil Certificate exam.
Government introduced standardisation of answer scripts in public examinations with a view to 
ensuring an accurate 
evaluation system. In new system head and other examiners evaluate answer scripts as per model answers provided them, said officials.
‘We would try to reach deep into the reason of dropping pass rate,’ Nahid said. 
Primary and mass education minister Mostafizur Rahman said a research was needed to know the reason of poor results in Primary Education Completion Examinations and Ibtedayi Education Completion exam.
Board chairmen and officials, however, said that besides new answer 
script evaluation system, poor performances of the students of Comilla education board and bad scores in English and mathematics caused the results to slide.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, after receiving results from Nahid and Mostafizur in the morning, asked the authorities concerned to give attention to the educational institutions whether educational activities were conducted properly. 
‘Our students are meritorious and we are giving them all sorts of facilities. Why couldn’t they pass in the examination? I think that special attention must be given to all institutions whether educational activities are going on properly there,’ she said.
About introduction of primary education completion and JSC and other equivalent examinations, she reiterated that these exams were helping children raise self-confidence by removing fear about public examinations.
In the afternoon, Nahid and Mostafizur held separate press conferences at their offices to publish the results.
Nahid said that this year 20,18,271 of the 24,82,342 examinees passed the JSC and equivalent examinations.
The combined pass rate was 83.65 per cent this year while it was 93.06 per cent in 2016, 92.33 per cent in 2015, 90.41 per cent in 2014, 89.94 per cent in 2013, 86.97 per cent in 2012 and 83.71 per cent in 2011, board officials said.
According to the results, 1,91,628 students got GPA 5, a decrease by 55,960 from 2,47,588 in 2016.
The number of schools and madrassahs with 100 per cent pass rate fell to 5,279 from 9450 in 2016. And institutes with zero pass rate rose to 59 from 31 in 2016.
This year, 17,07,024 of the 21,03,763 examinees passed the JSC examinations under eight education board, with a 83.10 per cent pass rate, a decrease by 9.79 percentage points from last year. 
This year, 1,84,397 students got GPA 5, a decrease by 50,662 from 2,35,059 in 2016. 
In JDC exam this year, pass rate is 86.80 per cent, a decrees by 7.22 percentage points in comparison with past year.
Board officials said that poor performance of students of Comilla education board affected the combined results. 
This year pass rate for Comilla board stood at 62.83 per cent, a 26.83 percentage-point decrease from 89.68 per cent in 2016. Nahid said that they would look into matter of this debacle of the Comilla board.
Some board officials and teachers said that students’ poor performance in English and mathematics was responsible for the low pass rate.
In Comilla board, 70.70 per cent students passed English against 92 per cent passed in 2016. In Dhaka board, 88.25 per cent students passed English against 94 per cent in 2016.
In Comilla board, 82 per cent students passed mathematics against 97 per cent in 2016. In Jessore board, 88 per cent students passed the subject against 98 per cent in 2016.
Mostafizur said that this year 25,66,271 of the 26,96,216 examinees passed the primary education completion examinations.
According to the result, pass rate stood at 95.18 per cent against 98.51 per cent in 2016, 98.52 per cent in 2015, 97.92 per cent in 2014, 98.58 per cent in 2013, 97.35 per cent in 2012 and 97.26 per cent in 2011, Directorate of Primary Education officials said.
This year, 2,62,609 students got GPA 5, a decrease by 19,289 from 2,81,898 in 2016. 
In Ibtedayi completion exam, 92.94 per cent of 2,54,399 examinees passed. It was five-year low as the pass rate of 2013 was 98.80 per cent.
Barisal division performed better in PECE examinations with 96.22 per cent pass rate and Rajshahi division performed better in ibtedayi exam with 96.28 per cent pass rate.
None from 360 primary schools and 88 madrassahs passed the exams. But all the students of 66,228 primary schools and 8,332 madrassahs passed the primary examinations.
