4,284 killed in road accidents in 2017: report

At least 4,284 people, including 539 children, were killed and 9,112 others injured in 3,472 road accidents in 2017, revealed a report published on Monday.
The report revealed that number of accidents increased by about 16 per cent and death toll by about 26 per cent in 2017 when compared with 2016.
National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways prepared the report based on reports published in 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and aired in eight online news agencies, a press release of the National Committee said.
A total of 3,412 people, including 453 children, died and 8,572 others injured in 2,998 road accidents in 2016.
The report pointed at nine vital reasons for accidents and casualties including reckless and unskilled driving, increasing number of three-wheeler vehicles on roads and highways, overloading and violation of traffic rules and regulations.
For the higher number of road accidents, NCPSRR general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey blamed lack of proper supervision and control of both government and non-government agencies concerned and lack of general people’s awareness.
