DNCC BY-POLL BNP picks Tabith Awal

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday picked Tabith Awal as its mayoral candidate for upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation by-poll. 
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the name of the party’s national executive committee member Tabith at a news conference at the party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka at 11:15pm.
The ruling Awami League, meanwhile, is likely to announce its mayoral candidate today. 
AL will announce its
candidate for the poll after a meeting of the party’s local government nomination board today.
At the conference, Fakhrul said that the BNP nomination board headed by Khaleda unanimously took the decision to choose Tabith as ‘best, fittest, and young’ mayoral candidate among other aspirants.
Replying to a question, he expressed hope that the BNP nominated candidate would win the by-poll scheduled to be held on February 26.
After securing party nomination, Tabith told reporters that it was the victory of the youth of the whole country. 
He said that he would start his campaign after official confirmation of his candidacy by the Election Commission.
In the last three days, 12 AL and five BNP leaders collected nomination forms from their respective parties.
On the other hand, Ganasanghati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki will collect nomination paper from the returning officer’s office today, said a press release.
Zonayed had participated in the first DNCC mayoral election as a mayoral candidate.
The 12 AL aspirants are: former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Atiqul Islam, Haque Group of Industries managing director Adam Tamizi Haque, Monipur School and College principal M Farhad Hossain, college teacher Shah Alam, Dhaka University teacher Jobaer Ahmed, former AL lawmaker HBM Iqbal, FBCCI director Helal Uddin, businessman Abed Mansur, former Dhaka city ward councillor Shamim Hasan, former AL central leader Mamtaj Hossain Mehedi, Rassell Ashequi, and retired army officer Yead Ali Fakir.
Following the death of Dhaka North first mayor Annisul Huq on November 30, the Election Commission on January 9, declared the schedule for the by-poll fixing January 18 the last date for submission of nomination papers and February 26 as the voting day.
According to the commission, its officials would scrutinise nomination papers on January 21 and 22, while nomination papers can be withdrawn till January 29.
