Shillong court sends Salah Uddin to jail

A Shillong court on Wednesday ordered Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salah Uddin Ahmed to jail custody for 14 days after the police produced him 16 days after his reappearance in the Indian state of Meghalaya.The court also ordered afresh medical check-up for Salah Uddin before taking him to jail custody, his counsel SP Mahanta told New Age over phone.
Replying to a query, the counsel said that he did not seek bail for BNP joint secretary general Salah Uddin.
Mahanta, Meghalaya High Court senior lawyer, said that Salah Uddin would be produced before the court after 14 days.
The superintendent of Police (city) of East Khashi Hills district in Shillong, Vivek Syiem, told New Age over phone that the police did not seek Salah Uddin to be remanded in custody for interrogation.
Earlier on Tuesday night, Shillong police interrogated Salah Uddin, the official said.
Salah Uddin was taken to a Shillong police station after North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Shillong discharged him on Tuesday.
The BNP leader had been receiving treatment at the institute in police custody since May 20, when he was shifted there from Shillong Civil Hospital, where he was admitted in police custody on May 11, for better treatment.Meghalaya police had arrested Salah Uddin on charge of intruding into the Indian territory on May 11.
The BNP leader was first taken to the Shillong Civil Hospital on May 11, then admitted to the Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Science in Shillong and again was admitted to the Shillong Civil Hospital on May 12.
According to Meghalaya police, Salah Uddin was found wandering the Golf Link area in Shillong on May 11.
On May 18, Salah Uddin told journalists at Shillong Civil Hospital that he was left ‘blindfolded’ with his hands ‘tied’ near Shillong Golf Course after probably a 12 to14 hour drive.
The BNP leader had remained missing after being picked up allegedly by law enforcers from an Uttara house in Dhaka on March 10. He surfaced in Shillong on May 11.
