SC to pass order Monday on Govt appeal against Khaleda’s bail

The Appellate Division on Sunday concluded hearing the appeals filed by the government and the Anti-Corruption Commission seeking stay on the bail granted to Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia by the High Court in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

A four member bench said that it would give its order on the appeals tomorrow.

The bench also extended its stay order on Khalada’s bail till tomorrow morning.

Earlier in the morning, the court heard the appeals for two hours.

Security around the court was heightened.

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam and the Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan prayed for cancelling the High Court bail order to Khaleda Zia. They also appealed to the apex court for speedy hearing of Khaleda’s appeal against sentence.

Khaleda’s lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali argued that the Apex Court should not interfere with the High Court order that had rightly granted Khaleda Zia four months bail mentioning four reasons including her health condition.

On Monday last, the High Court granted the interim bail to Khaleda Zia.

On February 22 last, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia filed a petition with the High Court seeking bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. On the day, the HC asked the lower court to submit all the relevant documents within 15 days.

On February 25, Khaleda Zia failed to secure bail in the case as the High Court said it would pass an order on her bail petition upon receiving all the documents relating to the judgment from the lower court.

On February 8 last, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.
