BNP says govt using ACC to obstruct its movement

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders have claimed that the government is using the Anti-Corruption Commission to obstruct the party’s ongoing movement demanding immediate release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP leaders came up with the observation while addressing a press conference at the party’s central office in the capital Naya Paltan area on Tuesday afternoon.

The party held the press conference to protest at the Anti-Corruption Commission’s newly launched inquiries against eight BNP leaders on charge of their alleged involvement in money laundering.

The BNP leaders against whom the investigation has been launched are — standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice-chairmen M Morshed Khan, Abdul Awal Mintoo, joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and executive committee member Tabith Awal.

The party’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi read out the party statement at the conference.

He said that the allegation against the BNP leaders were false and fabricated.

‘The government is using the ACC to obstruct our movement and keep BNP out of the upcoming election. The government is trying to hold another one-sided national election in 2019 like the last one,’ Rizvi said.

Among others, BNP standing comity members — Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and vice-chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo, spoke at the conference.

They claimed that the ACC’s allegation against them was imaginary and fabricated and the government was intentionally trying to destroy their image before the election.
