MP asks speaker for ruling on public servants to respond properly to govt wants

A parliamentarian of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Moin Uddin Khan Badal, on Sunday demanded a ruling by the Speaker that public servants respond properly to the government’s wants in a given situation. He also sought a House ruling towards the public servants to have appropriate respects for the public representatives, United News of Bangladesh reports. The JSD MP placed his demands standing on a point of order in the parliament. He alleged that the public servants did not perform timely as two tankers of an oil-carrying train plunged into a canal at Benguira in Boalkhali upazila on Friday noon. A rail bridge collapsed on Chittagong-Dohazari rail route as the train was crossing it. Two more wagons along with its locomotive also derailed in the accident. Two tankers with 33,640 litres of oil each sank in the water, spilling the fuel oil in the estuary of the Bay of Bengal. Badal expressed his resentment as the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) did not take quick and effective steps. “I’ve visited the spot; when I asked Railway officers about cleaning the oil spills, they told me that they had nothing to do with it,” he said. Badal said that CPA has a vessel to extract oil on the water. “I called the CPA chief, but could not reach him as it was a holiday. I was informed today that a CPA vessel moved to the Karnaphuli River to measure the situation. It will take 72 hours to assess.” Later, Railways Minister Md. Mazibul Hoque gave a statement under rules 300. Bangladesh Railway has formed a three-member committee, headed by chief engineer of the East Zone of Bangladesh Railway Qamrul Hasan, to investigate the incident. The authorities have also suspended two officers — assistant executive engineer Abdul Hamid and deputy assistant engineer of bridge department-1 Akbar Ahmed — for the negligence in duty.
