Mirza Fakhrul gets bail in all 7 cases
The High Court on Sunday granted interim bail to detained Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the three cases paving way of his release from jail. A bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Khasruzzaman issued the bail order after hearing three separate bail petitions moved by senior lawyers Rafique-ul Huq and Zainul Abedin. Rafique later told reporters that the bail order in the last three cases paved the way of Fakhrul’s release from the jail as he was not wanted in any other case. Fakhrul was arrested from the National Press Club premises on January 6 in seven cases the police filed against him and senior leaders of the BNP led alliance. The authorities allege that he ordered, abetted and instigated unidentified party men to blast several crude bombs, vandalise five buses and a police motorbike and set them on fire at seven places of the capital on the eve of January 5, when BNP was set to observe as Democracy Killing Day. Till January 31, He was shown arrested only in two out of the seven cases to prolong his detention although he appealed to the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court to show him arrested in all the cases at a time to facilitate his bail, said lawyers. Earlier, Fakhrul was framed in 79 cases including on the charges of killing several passengers in serial arson attacks on buses in the capital and blasting crude bombs to prevent police from discharging duty before the controversial January 5, 2014 general election with no credible contestants.
