BUS ARSON: Warrant issued against 33 BNP men
The metropolitan sessions’ judge’s court in Dhaka on Monday issued warrants for the arrest of 33 Bangladesh Nationalist Party men in an arson case in the city’s Mirpur area on January 25. The judge, Kamrul Hossain Mollah, issued the order after taking cognisance of the charge sheet brought against 36 leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance in the case which was filed under Special Powers Act 1974 and Explosive Substances Act 1908. Mirpur police sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet on March 19 against 36 leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance, including BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, and the BNP chairperson’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas. The 33 people against whom warrants were issued included Rafiqul Islam Mia, Amanullah Aman and Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas. The court issued the arrest warrants against the 33 BNP men out of 36 accused as they did not appear before the court during the hearing on the case. Other leaders included former Chhatra Dal president Azizul Bari Helal, its former secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, and Jatiyatabadi Jubadal secretary Saiful Islam Nirob. The court also asked the police to submit a report on execution of the warrants by August 3. On January 25, during a blockade BNP activists allegedly hurled a firebomb at a bus in front of Sony Cinema at Mirpur section-1.
