Police now out of control: Khaleda
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Sunday alleged that the police went out of control. Addressing an iftar party, she said, ‘The hands of the police have become very long. They are now in nobody’s control and they now claim that they are protecting the government.’ Doctors Association of Bangladesh, the doctors’ platform backed by the BNP, organised the function at the city’s Ladies Club at Eskaton. ‘A section of police members are now engaged in torturing citizens…They pick up innocent people and made them victims of disappearances or put them in jail if they fail to pay ransom,’ Khaleda said. The former prime minister said that there was no iota of democracy, rule of law, human rights in the country as power grabbers were now ruling the country. She said, ‘Killing, disappearance and torture against women are going on unabated in the country. The power grabbers’ government is responsible for that…Ruling party men, their lawmakers, Juba League, Chhatra League are behind the incidents.’ The BNP chief said that the people were not well because of extortion and price hike of essentials in the month of Ramadan. Khaleda alleged that the government had politicised all the institutions. ‘Even the judiciary is now politicised…Their [ruling party] men are being put in the judiciary, where common people cannot get justice, but the Awami League men are being spared despite committing offence like murder and abduction,. she said. Khaleda called the people to oust the ‘oppressive’ government as she said democracy was inevitable in the country to establish rule of law. BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh president AQM Badrudozza Chowdhury, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, Doctors Association of Bangladesh president AKM Azizul Haque and its secretary general AZM Zahid Hossain, among others, attended the programme.
