Maya, Quamrul should resign: TIB

The disaster management and relief minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and food minister Qamrul Islam should resign from their positions willingly on the allegations of corruption, said Transparency International Bangladesh officials on Tuesday. At a press conference on the launching of a survey report, TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said if the ministers resigned from their positions it would set an example for all. He said the government has no way to ignore these allegations for the sake of its acceptability and gaining people’s confidence. About Maya, he said that the graft allegation raised against Maya was under trial, but it would be fair if he resigned to set an example. About the import of ‘substandard wheat’, Iftekharuzzaman said Qamrul should also resign willingly over the allegation. He stressed the need for conducting a probe into the much-talked-about wheat scam following proper procedures of investigation. ‘If they can prove that they are clean in court or through investigation, their popularity will rise and people will embrace them with flowers,’ he added. The Appellate Division on June 14 revoked a High Court verdict that had acquitted Maya of graft charges, overturning a Special Judge’s Court verdict that had sentenced him to imprisonment for 13 years on February 14, 2008. In February this year two lakh tonnes of wheat was imported from Brazil which turned out to be substandard and low quality. News Courtesy: www.newagebd.net
