Khaleda warns party leaders
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, has warned senior party leaders against talking about the party’s internal matter in public.
At a meeting with senior party leaders at her Gulshan office on Monday night, she issued the caution without naming anyone and expressed her annoyance with some leaders for their recent ‘sensitive’ remarks on internal matters of the party, said leaders present.
‘Any leader can discuss or criticise the party matters within the party forum, but sensitive remarks on internal matters damage to the party’s image,’ Khaleda was quoted by the party leaders to have told the meeting.
According to them, Khaleda told the meeting that party leaders and activists were aggrieved by the comments made by some senior leaders on internal matters of the party.
Recently, conversations of three standing committee members – Moudud Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman and Abdul Moyeen Khan – were leaked in a social media and published in newspapers.
In the conversations, they reportedly commented that the present BNP was not fit to reach its goal.
The BNP chairperson on Monday held the emergency meeting of the party’s standing committee members, vice-chairmen, her advisers and joint secretaries general stationed in Dhaka.
Khaleda told the meeting that the position of any leader would not be considered in evaluation of their performance, a standing committee member said.
The BNP chief said that those who were active and dedicated, and played responsible role in the immediate-past anti-government movement would be given responsible positions in the party and they should not be treated equally with the inactive and irresponsible leaders, the standing committee member added.
According to him, Khaleda hinted that some might lose their positions for their ‘disappointing’ performance.
The meeting did not discuss or give any direction for launching movement immediately but emphasised that the party and its associate bodies should be revamped from central to grassroots level before going for a fresh movement, the meeting sources said.
The party high command gave priority to the release of the detained party leaders and activists on bail prior to reorganise the party.
She asked the party leaders to look after the field level leaders and activists who were in jail or facing cases.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan at a briefing after the meeting said that Khaleda instructed the leaders of the BNP and its associate organisations to go to their respective areas even during this month of Ramadan to carry out mass contact and stand beside those grassroots who were arrested and prosecuted or facing problems.
He said the meeting decided to strengthen the organisation across the country.
Khaleda sat in the formal meeting with the party leaders after a long gap since January 5, when she had announced countrywide non-stop blockade.
