BNP to hold prayer sessions on Aug 15 marking Khaleda’s birthday

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday announced to hold countrywide prayer sessions on August 15 on the occasion of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s birthday.
Khaleda and her party leaders and activists formally celebrate August 15 as her birthday amid harsh criticism mainly from its political rival Awami League for celebrating the day on which the founding president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was assassinated on August 15 in 1975.
BNP refrained from celebrating Khaleda’s birthday formally in 2017 as its leaders and activists were asked to stand by flood-affected people and to pray for Khaleda’s long life.
Khaleda Zia was born on August 15 in 1946, according to BNP.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addressing a function in Dhaka on Sunday said prayer sessions would be held at metropolitan cities, and in district and upazila headquarters across the country for release of Khaleda and her early recovery from illness.
Rizvi was addressing a discussion prior to a prayer session at BNP’s central office organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal to mark birthday of the late Arafat Rahman Koko, younger son of Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda was jailed five years in a graft case by a special Dhaka judge’s court on February 8 and sent to old Dhaka central jail in Dhaka.
Rizvi said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with the party’s senior leaders would visit the grave of the late president Ziaur Rahman, founder of BNP, and hold a prayer session at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city at 11:00 am on the day of Eid-ul-Azha.
