Shahidul Alam sent to jail

A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate’s court on Sunday sent internationally acclaimed photographer and writer Shahidul Alam to jail after interrogation in police custody for seven days.
Metropolitan magistrate Farhat Bin Amin Chowdhury passed the order as the police investigators took him
to the court premises.
Shahidul was not taken to the courtroom during the hearing, a court official said, adding that he had no defence lawyer in the hearing taken place at about 3:15pm.
‘We have not produced him in front of the magistrate as we had not sought his fresh remand in
custody,’ general recording officer of the court sub-inspector Mahmudur Rahman said.
The investigators informed the court that Shahidul Alam might be interrogated further and it would be better if he was kept in jail custody until the investigation was completed.
Shahidul’s counsel Jyotirmay Barua could not be reached.
On August 6, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor remanded Shahidul Alam in police custody for seven days for interrogation in a case under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology Act filed with Ramna police station few hours after his arrest at his Dhanmondi house on August 4.
Shahidul Alam was arrested few hours after he had given an interview to Doha-based television channel Al Jazeera on the ongoing student protests for road safety.
‘I was hit [in custody]. [They] washed my blood-stained punjabi and then made me wear it again,’ Shahidul Alam said as he was produced before the court on August 6.
He was taken to Bangabndhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on August 8 following a High Court.
Several hundred academic, writers, journalists, photographers and rights activist urged Bangladesh authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Shahidul Alam.
