Fakhrul meets Khaleda at jail
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met the party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia at Old Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday afternoon.
Dhaka Central Jail’s senior superintendent Iqbal Kabir Chowhury told New Age that Mirza Fakhrul Islam talked to Khaleda for one hour from 4:00pm at the jail gate on Nazimuddin Road in the capital.
Later, Fakhrul Islam told reporters that the BNP chairperson called on the people to remain alert about the country’s situation and to continue the movement for ‘restoring democracy’, reports United News of Bangladesh.
‘Madam (Khaleda) gave a message to the people urging them to remain alert and carry out the movement for democracy,’ Fakhrul said.
He said although Khaleda Zia was physically sick, she was mentally very strong. ‘Her condition is not better than what I saw her last time in jail. I think she is enduring serious pain.’
Fakhrul said she met the BNP chief at the guestroom of the building she is confined and exchanged greetings with her. ‘I couldn’t imagine I would see her in such a condition, it’s very painful for me.’
Khaleda had been waiting for homemade-food to have on the Eid day. She, however, took the food served by the jail authorities in the evening at the request of the IG Prison.
Fakhrul also said Khaleda urged the country’s people to pray for her.
He said he would hold a meeting with the party’s standing committee members to apprise them of the issues he discussed with Khaleda Zia.
Before this, Fakhrul met Khaleda on April 28.
Khaleda got bails in sixth case since she was sent to the jail on February 8 for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.
Her lawyers said she would need to get bail in two more cases to be released from the jail.
