AL supports use of EVM in next polls: Quader
Ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that the party would support using Electronic Voting Machines in the next general election likely to be held in December.
At the concluding ceremony of moth-long commemoration programmes of the party to mark National Mourning Day at Institution of Engineers Bangladesh auditorium, he said that the Awami League was in favour of using EVM in next polls as it was a modern and sophisticated system and used in different countries in the world.
The Election Commission,
however, would make the final decision on the use of EVMs and the commission’s decision would be final, said Quader, also the road transport and bridges minster.
He criticised Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders for opposing the system and said that the EVM was the most acceptable for casting votes in the modern world.
Dhaka city north and south units of AL jointly organised the discussion to mark August 15, 1915, when the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed at his Dhanmandi house.
Referring to the demand of the BNP and some others political parties that the government should resign and parliament should be dissolved before the declaration of election schedule, Quader said that the next general election would be held as per the constitution. It would not be possible for the Awami League-led government to bring any change in the electoral system, Quader said.
There was no possibility of holding dialogue with BNP before the next election, he said.
