Police press charges against five JMB suspects

Kishoreganj police on Wednesday pressed charges against five suspected members of a faction of Jammatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh in a case relating to extremist attack on a police check post close to the Sholakia Eidgah on July 7, 2016.
The attack took place when thousands of people had already gathered waiting to offer their Eid prayers.
In the attack two cops, a housewife and a suspected extremist attacker were killed.
Investigation officer of the case and Kishoreganj Sadar police station inspector (investigation) Md Arifur Rahman pressed the charges in a 13-page charge-sheet.
Kishoreganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Abu Sama Mohammd Iqbal Hayat told New Age that court inspector Tafiqul Islam Taufiq took the charge-sheet. 
Police superintendent Mashrukur Rahman Khaled said that the suspects had been charged under the anti-terrorism act with approval from the home ministry. 
The suspects include Jahidul Huq Tanim, 26, of Paschim Tarapasha, Kishoreganj district town, Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, 33, of Raghabpur, Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, Sohel Mahfuz, 34, of Sadipur, Kumarkhali, Kushtia, Bara Mizan, 61, of Hazardigha, Shibganj, Chapainawabganj and Anwar Hossain, 47, of Gaibandha.
The SP said that the suspects were charged for committing, instigating, aiding and abetting terrorist acts, hatching criminal conspir
acy to commit the offence and for their membership of and support for a banned outfit.
He said that all the five accused are now in jail custody. 
‘We found involvement of 24 JMB operatives with planning, patronizing and implementing the deadly attack but 19 were killed in gunfights and raids by law enforcement agencies at different places at different time,’ said the SP.
The names of 19 killed extremist suspects have been dropped from the charge-sheet, he said.
He said that the police identified the main planner of the Sholakia attack as Tamim Chowdhury and Rajib Gandhi while the financer was Basharuzzaman alias Chaklet. ‘Tamim and Chaklet were killed in encounters.’ 
The SP said that they found involvement of five JMB suspects after they were killed in the army led commando operations against the attackers at the Holy Artisan Bakery in Gulshan in the capital on early July 2, 2016.
They are; Rohan Ibne Imtiaz, Nirbas Islam, Mir Sameh Mobashwer, Khairul Islam and Md Shafiqul Islam Uzzwal. 
On July 7, 2016, Kishoreganj police lines’ special force constables – Jahirul Islam and Ansarul Huq, local housewife Jharna Rani Bhoumik of Sabujbagh, Kishoreganj district town were killed and 13 people, including 12 cops, were injured during the extremists’ attack on the police checkpoint at Sabujbagh, close to the Sholakia Eidgah where the country’s largest Eid congregation take place each year.
Suspected attacker Abir Rahman, son of Sirajul Islam of Debidwar in Comilla, was also killed in ‘gunfight’ with the law enforcers on the spot.
The Sholakia attack took place barely a week after the terrorist attack on Holy Artisan.
