KILLING OF RAJON: Protests rage everywhere Two more accused held

Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, who was brutally tortured at Sundar Ali Market in Sylhet city on July 8, died of brain hemorrhage, according to the report of his autopsy conducted at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The autopsy, conducted by Dr Farhana Islam of SOMCH, said the body of the 13-year-old child bore 64 injury marks, Jalalabad Police Station officer-in-charge of Akhter Hossain told New Age Monday evening.
He said that they arrested prime accused Muhith’s cousin Ismail Hossain at Mirergaon under Sylhet Sadar Upazila early Monday for his suspected involvement in killing Rajon.
Kamrul Islam, another accused, was arrested in Jeddah on Monday, said Bangladesh ambassador to Saudi Arabia Golam Mosih.
He told New Age that Jeddah police arrested Kamrul, a driver by profession in Saudi Arabia, and will be repatriated to Bangladesh after completion of legal procedures.
A group of some five youths including Muhith beat Rajan to death branding him a thief on July 8 morning when he went there to sell vegetables.
The killers themselves took video footage of the incident and uploaded it on the internet. The video clip went viral on social networking site facebook and video-sharing site Youtube which stirred protests across the country.
The video shows the killers beating the teenager with a rod and asking him tauntingly whether he was happy.
As the boy prayed for mercy saying he was happy, the attackers said if he was happy at one strike, the happiness would double if he was beaten more, UNB reported.
New Age correspondent in Sylhet reports: local people confined Muhith when he and his three accomplices were trying to dump Rajon’s body at Kumargaon in the city.
Rajon’s father Azizur Rahman filed a murder case against Muhith Alam, 28, his brother Kamrul Islam, 30, his accomplice Ali Haydar, 34, and Mayna Miah, night guard of the market in which Rajon was beaten to death, the police said.
Meanwhile, state minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, responding to newsmen in his office on Monday, assured that the people involved in the brutal murder would not be spared.
Meanwhile, cross section of people — politicians, cultural activists, youths and student leaders, child and women rights defenders and organisations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country strongly protested at the brutal killing of Rajan.
The wave of protest was also seen in different social media platforms flooded by thousands of posts in a protest against the brutal killing.
Bangladesh Cricket Team Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim joined the protest on Monday by posting a photo in his official facebook page urging all to say no to child abuse.
National Human Rights Commission chairman Mizanur Rahman condemned the killing and bid to conceal the body and said the criminals went out of control as timely justice could not be ensured in cases of other violence against child.
In a human chain in front of National Press Club in the afternoon, politicians, cultural activists, youth and student leaders demanded immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment for all the killers.
Leaders and activists of Central Khelghar Asar, Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, Bangladesh Juba Union and Chhatra Union formed the human chain.
The human chain was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
Eminent personalities at a press conference organised by Child Rights Advocacy Coalition at National Press Club also demanded exemplary punishment of Rajon’s killers.
They also urged the people to raise their voice to pressure the government to ensure justice for the minor boy.
‘The incident proves that we have been degraded to beasts… Such criminal incidents are going on due to culture of impunity,’ said Citizens for Good Governance secretary Badiul Alam Majumder.
Jurist Shahdeen Malik said the killers’ joyous expression stunned all human beings.
He demanded legal support by the government for the family.
Farah Kabir, country director of Action Aid Bangladesh, said basic indicator of a civilised society was protection of child and urged the government to stand by the poor family.
Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum and Bangladesh Jatiya Mahila Ainjibi Samity also condemned the killed and demanded justice for the killing.
In Gaibandha, Bangladesh Chhatra Front formed a human chain protesting at the killing and exemplary punishment for the killers.
Residents of 22 villages in Sylhet held a meeting at the house of Rajon on Sunday night and issued a-24 hour ultimatum to the police administration to arrest the named accused for murdering Rajon, New Age correspondent in Sylhet reported.
