All Jatiya Party candidates on polls race as Ersahd changes claim

Hours after claiming to extending support to candidates of Awami League-led alliance, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Thursday night said the candidates of Jatiya Party will not quit the race rather contest the general election with plough symbol.

In a statement issued in the night, Ershad said Jatiya Party candidates who are contesting polls with Plough symbol will be in the race alongside those who are contesting the polls as candidate of AL-led alliance.

Ershad, also special envoy to the prime minister, earlier on the day said the Awami League nominated alliance candidates will be considered as Jatiya Party candidates in the 11th parliamentary elections. The former military junta, Ershad himself also supported the Awami League candidate former film star Akbar Hossain Pathan, better known as Farooque, for the Dhaka 17.

Ershad’s decision follows his return to Dhaka after two weeks ‘treatment’ in Singapore and it left only 26 candidates of the party in the election nominated by the AL-led alliance.

Last week the ruling Awami League requested its biggest partner Jatiya Party to order its candidates to support AL candidates considering their prescience as threats while contesting against the main opposition Jatiya Oikya Front candidates.

Bangladesh is set to hold parliamentary elections on December 30.
