DMP launches traffic discipline quarter
Home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said that severe traffic congestion will reduce if everybody follows the rules.
During inaugurating the traffic discipline quarter, to be observed between January 15 and January 31, he also requested drivers and pedestrians not to talk over phones during driving and crossing roads.
The minister inaugurated the quarter at Zero Point intersection in the capital to bring back discipline on roads and make people aware about traffic rules.
He said after two students had been killed by reckless driving at Kurmitola in the capital on July 29, 2018, they initiated special traffic programmes in August, September and October.
During these programmes the response from people were enormous, while the newest initiative was designed to remind them of the rules and regulations, he added.
The ceremony’s special guest DMP commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia said that due to different ongoing development project works traffic situation has become volatile in recent times.
He admitted that they were yet to fulfil the expectations of the citizens due to the presence of a huge number of vehicles on roads and address the prevailing mindset to regularly flout the rules.
After completion of these development works – including Mass Rapid and Bus Rapid transits – traffic congestion would reduce, Asaduzzaman observed.
He said that they had already specified around 130 points across the city routes for bus stoppages.
After observing this quarter, they would start working to free footpaths from occupants, he added.
The ceremony was attended, among others, by DMP traffic department additional commissioner Mir Rezaul Alam, joint commissioner (north) Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and joint commissioner (south) Mofiz Uddin Ahmed.
During the programme, initiatives will be taken including engaging students from adjacent schools and colleges on main roads in each area during starting and closing times of educational institutions and bringing in scouts to strengthen traffic control activities, make all zebra crossings and road markings visible, increase the number of video cases, continue check post activities in 29 points, distributing leaflets, holding awareness programmes with respectable persons in important intersections and engaging police members for encouraging pedestrians to use footbridges.
