1,433 seek AL nomination for 43 reserved JS seats for women
Ruling Awami League on Friday concluded the four-day sale of nomination forms for election to the reserved seats for women in the 11th parliament.
A total of 1,433 women aspirant candidates submitted the party’s nomination forms in the four days.
The elections would be held based on proportional representation, and according to the system, Awami League would get 43 of the 50 seats reserved for women and Jatiya Party would get 4. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader formally inaugurated the sale of the nomination forms on Tuesday.
The party sold a nomination form for Tk 30,000.
The 50 reserved seats would be distributed among the parties based on their proportional representation in parliament.
Of the parties, Awami League won 257, Jatiya Party 22, Bangladesh Nationalist Party 6, Workers Party of Bangladesh 3, Gono Forum, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction 2, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh 2, Tarikat Federation 1, Jatiya Party-JP 1 and independent candidates won 3 seats in the 11th parliamentary elections.
According to the proportional representation, of the 50 reserved seats, Awami League would get 43, Jatiya Party 4, BNP 1, and others would get 2.
Lawmakers elected from 300 territorial constituencies are the electorates for the elections to the reserved seats.
If the number of nominated candidates by a political party does not exceed the number of seats it deserves, the contenders will be declared elected after the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
Election Commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed on Monday told reporters that election schedule for the reserved seats would be announced on February 17.
The voter list for the elections would be published by February 12, he said.
