All eyes on DU syndicate meet
All eyes are now on the Dhaka University syndicate meeting scheduled for Tuesday to approve the draft amendments to the central student union constitution and the electoral code of conduct for the long awaited DUCSU polls to be held on March 11.
The apex body of the university that exercises administrative and supervisory control over the academic and administrative activities scheduled to sit on Tuesday.
Vice-chancellor of the university professor Akhtaruzzaman confirmed New Age about the meeting and also said that the drafts of amended DUCSU constitution and electoral rules would be placed in the meeting for approval.
Earlier, chief returning officer for the polls SM Mahfuzur Rahman told New Age that they would announce the complete schedule soon after the syndicate finalises DUCSU constitution and electoral rules.
Meanwhile, different student bodies and Bangladesh Students Right Protection Council, the platform which cradled recent quota reformation movement, on Saturday submitted their opinion to the university authority about the electoral code of conduct.
Leaders of different student bodies said that they would announce their manifesto and are set to nominate their candidates after the authorities declare the complete schedule.
The university authorities already held several meetings with the student organisations active on the campus to exchange views on the amendment to the DUCSU constitution and the formulation of the electoral code of conduct.
Earlier on January 17, the university authority appointed SM Mahfuzur Rahman as the chief returning officer also formed a 15-member advisory council as the university geared up for the polls, which remained stalled for about 28 years since 1990.
On January 20, the university authorities appointed five returning officers and formed a seven-member committee headed by pro-vice-chancellor (education) Nasreen Ahmad.
The university authorities promised time and again to hold the elections since DUCSU was formally dissolved on May 28, 1998.
The DUCSU polls, however, did not take place in the past 28 years since the successive university administrations and governments were reportedly bent on maintaining their dominance on the campus.
