Ex-AL MP’s son jailed for life
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced former member of parliament and Awami League leader Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony to life term imprisonment for killing two people at the capital’s Eskaton area on April 13, 2015.
Dhaka second additional metropolitan sessions court judge Manzurul Imam handed down the verdict in presence of Rony.
The court said that Rony deserved the death penalty for his crimes but he was sentenced to life term considering his ‘physical and mental state’ during committing the crime as he was drunk during and his daughter was in hospital then.
His gun was illegal and he could not mention how many cartridges he purchased or used.
The Forensic firearm examination report proved that his gun was used at that time.
The court also mentioned that the crime was heinous and inhuman and that he knew that the shooting would kill the victim and, knowing the matter, he opened shots over a silly incident. Rony, son of Pinu Khan, was also fined Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer six more months in jail.
A total of 24 out of 37 witnesses were testified in the case.
The trial against the lone accused started on March 6, 2016, through framing charges against him under section 302 of Penal Code.
According to the case, on April 13, 2015, Rony, who was then in a drunken condition, shot randomly on a tailback from his SUV as he was annoyed with the traffic jam on Dilu Road at New Eskaton area in the capital.
Two people — rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and autorickshaw driver Yakub — were shot and hospitalised following the incident.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 15 while Yakub died on April 23.
Hakim’s mother Monowara Begum filed the case with the Ramna police on April 15, the same year.
