Police now lobby for postings in foreign missions

Senior officials of the police during their exclusive meeting with prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday demanded their deputation to the Bangladeshi missions abroad as police liaison officer to deal with police-related issues.
Police policymakers are also planning for a specialised unit for universities and additional battalions for economic zones.
They placed their demand while meeting the prime minister at Prime Minister’s Office on the occasion of Police Week -2019.
The prime minister, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, inspector general of police Mohammad Javed Patwary and home ministry’s public security division secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin, among others, addressed the meeting.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia, highway police chief deputy inspector general Atikul Islam, DMP’s additional police commissioner Monirul Islam, DMP’s deputy commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar and Rajbari police superintendent Asma Siddika Mily placed various demands.
The DMP commissioner demanded that the government send their officials to foreign ministry for deployment in over 50 Bangladesh missions abroad.
Another senior police official told New Age there were many issues in the embassies such as arrest of any expatriate Bangladeshi or providing them legal assistance or collecting information during passport verification.
A Bangladeshi diplomat said currently Bangladeshi National Security Intelligence officials were being deputed to various mission for security issues apart from defence attaches who looked after the military to military cooperation.
The police in their annual gathering on Monday demanded more facilities, including medical corps and increased ration and allowances while prime minister Sheikh Hasina told them to take care that no innocent people fell prey to their torture and harassment.
On various demands of the police, Sheikh Hasina directed the authorities concerned to look into issues of posting police personnel in different embassies and Bangladesh missions abroad.
Another police official said that the prime minister also was considering the campus police for safety and security of public universities and additional battalions of industrial police for the economic zones.
The Awami League government is setting up 100 special economic zones.
The prime minister instructed arranging special job-specific training for police.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha added that prime minister Sheikh Hasina also put emphasis on building a more ‘people-friendly’ police force instructing the authorities concerned to dispose of police cases properly and on time to ensure quick justice.
‘Being imbued with patriotism, you’ll have to work becoming more people- friendly and creating confidence and trust among the people,’ she said.
The prime minister said that the police cases remained pending in the courts years after years which needed engagement of government officials along with the lawyers.
‘So, I think there should be a separate arrangement to look into these issues,’ she said.
While talking about the framing of Digital Security Act, the prime minister said many people were speaking against the law.
‘But the reality is that the law has been enacted to ensure security of the innocent and common people and protect their human rights. The law has been enacted to save the life and property of the people alongside protecting their rights,’ she added.
The senior police officers held separate meeting with the home minister.
